On a beautiful mid-June, Friday afternoon I traveled north for my best friend’s wedding in the Catskills. Whenever I venture out of the city I always try and squeeze in farm visits. This time I wasn’t quite as organized as usual. I had the area of New Paltz in mind and some farm names but I hadn’t actually called ahead. I don’t think it’s very nice to just drop in on a farmer but sometimes it’s worth a shot.
I first stopped at Bradley Farm but alas Ray was not there. His website said the farm stand was open so at the very least I thought I could pick up a snack. But I was so sad because in fact it was closed. Farmers don’t always have time to update their websites. More important things going on at the farm. Ray’s crew was around and kind enough to let me poke around.
Then I ventured over to Taliaferro Farm, where luckily the farm stand was open. I even got to observe their CSA members picking up their weekly goodies. Pete Taliaferro was around and he was kind enough to spend some time with me.
While we don’t currently buy from either of these farms because there is no easy way of getting their product, I have heard such wonderful things about them and their products over the years. Maybe with some creative problem solving we can get their products to the restaurant.
