California foraging trip (Part I: Northern CA) | February 22, 2011

I realize this post is a month overdue. But we are a long way from seeing and tasting such a bounty that I’m confident you will still yearn for all the food in my photos.
Let me start off by giving the biggest shout out to Kerry Clasby of CA Family Farms who couldn’t have been a better tour guide and host. The trip started off with me flying into San Francisco. I packed a lot into two days, including a meal at Francis, which I recommend, followed by the Oakland, Ferry Plaza and Marin farmers’ market over the course of my visit. I lived in San Francisco a number of years ago so I knew what I was getting myself into but it’s still always exciting to visit there, especially in winter when there are so many glorious, fresh ingredients. Another huge shout out to Janet Brown of Allstar Organics who with her partner Marty sell vegetables and their own hydrosols, essential oils, and flavored sugars and salts, grown with their own produce. Besides being amazing people and farmers, they introduced me to Kerry. So if it weren’t for them then this trip would have never happened.

Kerry drove up in her truck from Los Angeles to San Francisco to meet me so we could drive me back to Los Angeles. We left SF late one afternoon and in complete darkness stopped at a farm to pick up preordered produce from a farm in Hollister. Always an adventure pulling up to a farm and opening a cooler to transfer produce into a truck in the pitch dark. We continued to drive south until Kerry hit a wall after so many hours of driving. Didn’t hurt that I would get to see the rest of the drive the following morning in daylight. Plus I got to stay at the famous Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo.
